Heather and her husband Jon, have adopted two year old Maggie Mae. Maggie’s sweet natured, bubbly personality resulted in too many fabulous images for her very first photo session!

Once a year since 2003, I have photographed a dance recital. It has to be one of the craziest things I do all year. I even have a few partners in crime, who have stuck by me every year!

The Studio School of dance located in Olathe, teaches children ages three to seniors in high school. The Studio also happens to be the same studio that my sister and I took dance lessons from while we were growing up. Once a year they perform a dance recital, where many girls will dance in multiple different dances featuring skills such as ballet, tap, modern, jazz, hip hop and many more.

On the Thursday before recital, we set up at the dress rehearsal, and take group and individual photographs of all the girls. This will typically last a good 12 hours. Pete, my sister, Lori, my awesome friend Nancy and I, can usually be found crawling around on the floor, fixing shoes and tights, posing groups, and guiding the girls into their photographs.

After the actual photography is complete, Pete, Lori, and I will return home to process the images. This consists of selecting the best image of each girl, perfecting the image and preparing it for print. Last year, I think we finished around 4 AM. Then I will upload all of our prints to my lab in Minnesota. I think last year it was after 6 AM by the time I went to sleep.

My lab is wonderful, they work very quickly to get the prints created that morning to ship them out to me for Saturday morning delivery. Saturday morning, we will gather to sort and package all the prints. The first dance recital is at 2 PM on Saturday. Typically, by 12:30, you can find us setting up outside the auditorium to hand out the pictures to all the waiting families. Hopefully by the start of the second recital – 7 PM – we have handed out all of our pictures, and the craziness is over!

This year, our adventure begins on Thursday, May 31st. Wish us luck!!

An Artist

May 28, 2007

My mother is also an artist, only she uses oils to create her masterpieces. She is a member of Images Art Gallery in downtown KC, and is honored to be designated a Featured Artist during the month of June. The unveiling of her latest collection will occur at their First Friday event, on June 1st from 6-9 PM. You are invited to join the fun, see great works of art and sample a little wine and cheese!

Being a Model is Hard Work!

May 18, 2007

It doesn’t matter how well rested, fed and ready to go you are when you walk in the door for your first photo session! It is hard work being a smiley happy baby, sometimes you must succumb to the security of the thumb.
