Squeezing It In

July 31, 2011

Isaac & Julia have moved to Colorado, but before they left town, we had to squeeze in a portrait session. We needed to capture Julia’s nine month stage, Isaac turned six this summer, and it’s been awhile since we’ve done the two of them together, let alone we’ve never done the new family of four!

Of course, when the plan is to get as much captured as possible, things never go smoothly. Miss Julia had spent the previous week with an ear infection, and had refused to take any nap the day before. It took quite some work to convince her that one of us did not need to be holding her at all times, and she could let go and be on her own.

Mister Isaac is a mover and a shaker. From the first moment he could move, he’s never slowed down. So, you can only imagine how sitting still and waiting for little sister to cooperate can be quite frustrating. Especially when you’re a six year old, who gets to go home and have a water gun fight with your Daddy!

A Furry Fresh Look

July 30, 2011

Our favorite veterinarian hospital, Blackbob Pet Hospital, is one of the locations around Kansas City where you can see our portraits on display.

Earlier this year, I noticed that the current portraits had been hanging for a few years. This means that it was time for a fresh look! Back in May, we invited Blackbob Pet Hospital employees to bring out their furry kids for a special Pet Portrait Day. We had cats, dogs and a little bit of craziness, but we captured some adorable images!

Now, those adorable, four legged, furry faces, including Bruiser, the Blackbob Pet Hospital employee’s “kids” and a few other Blackbob patients adorn the lobby, hallway and exam rooms.

We feel very blessed to have this opportunity to hang these beautiful portraits for all to see!

Taking It On the Road

Photography by Brandi Through the Eyes of Our Intern – Volume 4

Last week, Pete and I traveled around the local area, visiting several businesses with which Photography by Brandi partners with in marketing. The way that marketing occurs is variable in many ways. At some places, there is simply a small countertop display and we simply restocked the business cards. At others, I was in awe of the way Brandi’s portraits seemed to paper the walls. At first, I was confused as to why one particular business seemed to have Photography by Brandi’s images seemingly on every wall, while others merely reserved space on the counter for business cards.

As the day went on, the mystery dissolved. At the businesses where we had a stronger presence, Pete and the local staff members greeted one another as old friends; they knew one another by name, asked questions about each other’s personal lives, and shared jokes as if they were sitting around having dinner conversation. At the other locations, the relationship was formal and professional, but it was perhaps just only that.

When I asked, Pete made it clear that when a business has a strong, lasting relationship with another business, it is easier to work together in mutually beneficial ways. Many of the businesses that have the most successful relationships with Photography by Brandi have had staff members out to the studio to experience a portrait session. This allows them to feel personally connected to Photography by Brandi as they see how the business works, and this personal connection helps them promote our business in a more natural way. It became clear to me, by the end of the day, that when two businesses maintain a purposeful relationship, in whatever sense of the word, the relationship benefits both businesses to a greater degree, and the relationship will last that much longer.

I think this is a supremely important lesson for me to learn. In addition to what I’ve learned about how to run and manage a business from the inside, I learned last week, the relations that a business builds with other businesses can be nearly as crucial as any other factor.

Celebrate and Walk With Me

July 28, 2011

The date for the annual Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk is Saturday, October 29th!

Did you know? This also happens to be my birthday! As if you needed a better reason to join our team…supporting our clients with Down syndrome and celebrating my birthday, it’s a two for one!!

Last year was such a great experience and it was the second time we had our very own team…the Photography by Brandi team! We had 24 team members and raised $2,030. I was completely thrilled!

This year, will you help me beat that?!? To do this, I need all of your help and support! Join the Photography by Brandi team and walk with us. It’s an amazing day, and definitely worthwhile!

It’s the perfect event for kids, babies and adults of every age! Not only is the walk the easiest, low key stroll you’ve ever taken, but the food and activities beforehand are awesome!

- TONS of food: including hot dogs, Italian sausage, kettle corn, ice cream and popsicles and even coffee for crazy peeps like me!
- Games for all the kids (big and small): Jumps and slide moon bouncers, rock climbing wall, carnival rides and games, horseback rides.
- Entertainment: roaming clowns and magicians (this past year there were even a couple of entertainers on stilts!) and stage performances including music and dancing.
- Chiefs football players signing autographs and cheering everyone on at the start line! KC Wolf giving hugs and posing for party pics.
- Thousands of friends (old and new) supporting each other!

…AND, best of all, lots of money is raised to support all the amazing things the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City does for the community!

We will be setting up a hang out tent and bringing fun games, yummy snacks, and making a day of it. This is something you won’t want to miss! Mark your calendars!

Or, even better, join my team today!! Here is the link to the official Step Up website. Look for the Photography by Brandi team, and click the Walk for Photography by Brandi link.

Just in case you need some motivation to participate, here is the link to last year’s event! We had a blast!

Crazy, Fun & Silly

July 28, 2011

I think Grace’s goal, for this year’s portrait session, was to see how silly she could be. The more crazy she became, the more funny she thought she was. Everything from trying to slowly inch her way closer and closer to the camera, to striking some crazy poses and even naming a fly, spending the entire session trying to catch him. She entertained herself the entire session!

My goal was to just capture each moment, from the sassy smirks, to the toothless smiles, to the crinkle nose laughs! Every expression was truly just Grace being Grace!

Catching Flies

July 27, 2011

Austin has a variety of smiles, but they all include a wide open mouth, with variations and up turned corners! This works really well for screaming, squealing and talking…something he loves to do when he gets very excited.

Despite not really taking a good nap, like he was supposed to before his session, Austin pulled out his “catching flies” open mouth smile the entire session!

Up, up and away!

It’s A Boy!

July 25, 2011

Mommy and Daddy didn’t know what they were having when William made his appearance. First, out came that beautiful head of hair, with it’s very own highlights followed by the evidence that he was a boy!

Oh, my goodness, is he a boy! He is full of grunts, burps and funny noises! They’re all, of course, absolutely adorable, because they’re very tiny and somewhat petite…but they’re also very much all boy!

Then there’s his self made poses; quite provocative and not at all modest! I did not capture any of those, despite the fact that he insisted on striking them frequently!

I think this cutie pie is going to have many ladies wrapped around his finger!

Tongue Time

July 22, 2011

Kathryn is a bit tongue obsessed…she uses her tongue to express many things. When she’s thinking hard, or studying something, she sticks out her tongue. When she’s focusing on trying to do something, like pulling up or sitting down, there’s just a hint of tongue. When she’s excited, her mouth is wide open and her tongue is on full display!

If you want to know Kathryn’s state of mind, check out her tongue!

Crawling Away

July 22, 2011

Usually I love to put crawling baby girls in dresses, because the flowing skirt completely slows down the process of crawling. Their knees get stuck, their forward movement gets delayed and sometimes they get frustrated, but overall it’s great for slowing down a speed demon crawler.

Annika, not so much! Mommy obviously dresses Annika in dresses quite frequently, because Annika knows exactly how to work around the skirt. The problem was her solution was completely unphotographic. Annika does a bear crawl…legs straight, moving with her feet not her knees…and head, well it’s straight down, ready to barrel through any obstacles in her way.

We definitely had to find other methods of keeping Annika from crawling away!

July 21, 2011

That’s my word for Olivia! Whether it was expressing her need to see the ponds, by repeating the word “water” and “back to water” about every thirty seconds for the first fifteen minutes of her session. Or, when we took her shoes off outside and she couldn’t get down off the bench, because she needed her shoes. She stated the word “shoes” over and over again!

It really didn’t matter what it was, she’s a pro at stating what she wants over and over, so many times, that she eventually wears you down and you will give in! However, the smile that crosses her face when she’s pleased is worth every penny!
