Full Circle

September 30, 2011

Mommy told me that Landon had just woken up from his nap. He was dressed and ready to go. Ready to go, as I quickly discovered, meant full speed ahead! Landon did not slow down once. He had no interest in checking out the chair, or climbing on the bench. He wanted down on the ground and he was going to super speed crawl all over the studio.

The only thing that I found to make him pause for a second was Cheerios. He’d pause long enough to devour them.

So, it was moving, eating and then came the exhaustion…thumb in the mouth, rubbing the eyes, arms over head and ready to crash!

Lots of Breaks

September 29, 2011

Poor Miss Riley is working on some more teeth! She’s had her two bottom ones pop through, but those top ones are still pushing their way in, and boy are they hurting her.

All Riley wanted to do was chew on anything she could get her hands on. Her stylish new Converse were the first thing to catch her attention. Then there was her flowy dress, with a skirt that was the perfect length for putting in her mouth. We made her barefoot…that didn’t stop her, as her feet went right into her mouth.

Riley would last a few minutes and then she’d melt down, so we’d take a mini break so she could snack on a bottle. I quickly caught on that she wasn’t actually eating, she was just chewing. We’d let her chew until she felt better and then we’d get a few more minutes from her. This quickly became our routine!

Ah, the hard life of a model!

Join Our Team!

September 28, 2011

The date for the annual Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk is Saturday, October 29th!

Last year was such a great experience and it was the second time we had our very own team…the Photography by Brandi team! We had 24 team members and raised $2,030. I was completely thrilled!

This year, will you help me beat that?!? To do this, I need all of your help and support! Join the Photography by Brandi team and walk with us. It’s an amazing day, and definitely worthwhile!

It’s the perfect event for kids, babies and adults of every age! Not only is the walk the easiest, low key stroll you’ve ever taken, but the food and activities beforehand are awesome!

- TONS of food: including hot dogs, Italian sausage, kettle corn, ice cream and popsicles and even coffee for crazy peeps like me!
- Games for all the kids (big and small): Jumps and slide moon bouncers, rock climbing wall, carnival rides and games, horseback rides.
- Entertainment: roaming clowns and magicians (this past year there were even a couple of entertainers on stilts!) and stage performances including music and dancing.
- Chiefs football players signing autographs and cheering everyone on at the start line! KC Wolf giving hugs and posing for party pics.
- Thousands of friends (old and new) supporting each other!

…AND, best of all, lots of money is raised to support all the amazing things the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City does for the community!

We will be setting up a hang out tent and bringing fun games, yummy snacks, and making a day of it. This is something you won’t want to miss! Mark your calendars!

Or, even better, join my team today!! Here is the link to the official Step Up website. Look for the Photography by Brandi team, and click the Walk for Photography by Brandi link. You must sign up by Friday at 6 pm to ensure your t-shirt will be printed with our Photography by Brandi team name.

Just in case you need some motivation to participate, here is the link to last year’s event! We had a blast!

Poor little Hudson at six days old, didn’t have much in the eyebrow department. The question is out, does this mean he’ll have red hair like big sister, Lola, or is the hint of blonde hair at the nape of his neck indicative of a future tow-head? It will be fun to see what grows in!

In the meantime, he’s rocking the minimal hair look…bald and beautiful! Hudson had just the right of squishiness and rolls, while still being moldable and movable! With the exception of being a little jumpy and a few screams…just to remind us that he was still in charge…he was the perfect little model!

Even when we added sister, Lola, he just laid still and let her touch him and kiss him, and love all over him!

Fun in the Rain!

September 21, 2011

I can’t really say it was a beautiful day, but it definitely could have been much worse! The day started off with a pretty heavy downpour, which came to a stop just long enough for us to get everything set up. About the time our first attendees arrived, a fine mist had started back up…it wasn’t horrible, just strong enough to give everything a nice wet coat of moisture.

Luckily, I had planned for the potential of rain. We had a great, leak proof tent from Country Club Tents to keep everyone dry…well, as long as you stayed under the tent.

Many of the kids ventured out into the yard to play on the inflatables. (Thanks to The Party Patch for providing the inflatables, tables & chairs, grill and popcorn machine.)
The slide was actually a great hit; the added water feature made sliding very fast and fun! But, I did hear many comments about wet booties after going down the slide.

My favorite kid question of the day came from Ava. She walked right up to me and as serious as could be, she said, “Brandi, why is the bouncer wet?” I looked at her and I said the only thing I could think of, “Because it’s raining.” She gave me a stare and then seemed to accept my answer and walked away.

Our Griller Man, Todd, was manning the grill, cooking up burgers, dogs and brats! The popcorn, cookies and awesome rice krispies were a huge hit!

All of our kiddos walked away with fun filled goodie bags, including new PhotobyB shirts! (Thanks to Classic Awards for helping us create the perfect shirt and turning them around so quickly!)

Devin, our favorite magician, was back with new tricks for the kids, and unbelievable tricks for the adults. Every time we see Devin, he pulls out something new, that seriously just makes my head hurt trying to figure out how in the world he pulled that off! Thanks, Devin, for a fantastic afternoon of entertainment!!

The sun tried really hard to poke it’s head out and after awhile it succeeded…we had a nice dry spell…just long enough for us to enjoy the end of the picnic. Then, as we were picking everything up, the torrential downpour began again. All to remind me that the fine mist, and minimal winds we had, could have been SO much worse!

All in all, I had a blast! There is nothing better than seeing huge smiles on my favorite kiddos’ faces…whether they’re enjoying a very blue Ring Pop, or the juiciness of a burger…it’s all worth it! A huge thanks goes out to everyone who made it, rain or shine!

And an even bigger thank you to all our awesome helpers…Lori, Tracy, Todd and Faith…we could not have done it without you!!

The Lollipop Bribe

September 20, 2011

Whenever I have a little one who is just very unsure about having their photo taken, I resort to the lollipop bribe. It works almost every time! Although, every once in awhile, I come across a kid who is not a fan of lollipops, but those are few and far between.

Some kids will hold the lollipop, some will lick it to death, some will share with Mommy & Daddy (great for taking big bites and making it disappear), and some eat it all themselves.

Lila was a first for me. Lila almost didn’t care about the lollipop at all once she had it, but the idea of getting the lollipop…oh, that was fantastic! The first one, she licked about five times and gave it back to Mommy. The second one, she waited patiently while Daddy “tried” so hard to get it open…meanwhile, my shutter finger is clicking like crazy. She gave it a few licks, and wanted to pick out the third one herself.

It was definitely a unique strategy, and yes, we opened three lollipops…but it was worth it!

As the fall portrait season quickly approaches, have you been trying to find a solid matching top/onesie for your baby? Is it not one of the most challenging things you have ever had to do?!?

I know that by far, the challenge of finding a solid matching outfit for baby is the number one complaint I hear from parents. Everything has cute baby stuff on in…tractors and frogs or hearts and flowers…not really the look you want captured in a beautiful portrait that will hang on your walls for years.

Thanks to our awesome client, Sarah, I have news…the new Buy Buy Baby in Overland Park and online, has seven solid short sleeve and seven solid long sleeve onesies available for purchase!

I’m sure supplies are limited, so make sure you get yours today!

Talking and Talking

September 19, 2011

Brett’s senior session lasted a little bit longer than the typical guy senior session, but that was mostly because we talked so much!

I’m the first to admit, I’m not the best at holding a conversation and photographing at the same time. I can ask a question or two and listen to the response, but I usually can’t reply to the response without breaking away from the actual photography.

Brett was great at answering questions and telling me about himself, school, summer and future dreams, so it was very easy to get drawn into the conversation and then, when he would bust out with a great laugh, quickly remember, oh yeah, I’m supposed to be photographing.

The great thing about talking is that it really brings out a relaxed feeling, and we all know when you’re relaxed and comfortable…that’s when the best images are captured!

A Crazy Bunch

September 15, 2011

It’s been a couple of years since I last photographed this crazy bunch. Not a lot has changed; they’re still a little bit crazy, a little bit sweet, a little bit sassy and a little bit stinky! However, they are definitely all growing up…right before my very eyes!!

Little man, Auggie, has definitely changed the most. At four years old, he’s now much more into posing for the camera, then he was at two years old, when really all he wanted to do was run away.

Sweet girl, Kate, took working the camera very seriously, and had a blast striking pose after pose.

Tom’s always my closed mouth, smirky guy, but with just the right noises, and the right subjects, I can always pull out some fabulous laughs!

Elliott’s had the biggest growth spurt. Though, I’m still taller than him! The longer I continue to photograph the same kiddos, year after year, the closer and closer they get to outgrowing me!

Ready to Pose

September 15, 2011

I think Gabriella has spent many hours at home looking at big sister’s most recent wall portrait. In it, big sister is laying on the floor looking up at me.

As soon as we started, Gabriella said, “Are we going to start laying on the floor?” I said, “Let’s start standing up.” After a few minutes, “Floor now.” At that point, I’m thinking, sure why not? She immediately strikes a pose…definitely trying to mimic big sister.

With a little bit of coaching, I got her to relax and just be herself! I still got some cute ones of her on the floor, just not that exact copy of big sis!
