A Girls Day

November 20, 2013

On a day when she was out of school and her two older brothers had school, Madison had a Girls Day with her Mom! They started Girls Day with a trip to see me! It sounded like the day started off on the perfect note. Fun Mommy and Daughter time getting ready for a portrait session. Jamming to loud music on the drive to the studio. Time in front of the camera…smiling, laughing and sharing stories.

It sounded like Madison had the rest of the day planned out as well! She thought Stix should be on the schedule for a yummy shrimp lunch. Madison also wanted to get some new basketball shoes, for the upcoming season, so a little shopping was in order. However the rest of the day panned out, I’m sure it was full of girly fun! I’m glad I was able to help kick off the day!

You’re Silly

November 19, 2013

This was Joey’s favorite thing to say to me…and surprisingly not the first time I’ve heard it from one of my little clients! When working with children, of all ages, I tend to act a bit goofy.

If I’m relaxed, then they relax and give me natural smiles. I make funny faces, say funny one liners and just let loose…which gets me the “You’re Silly” comment.

I always roll with it and become even more silly! That turns on the cheese ball smiles and the scrunchy noses…two things Joey is the master of!

So really, who’s the silly one?!?

Calm for the Moment

November 18, 2013

I’m pretty sure that John Daniel would have much rather spent his morning running around the house, wrestling his brother or even karate chopping the sofa, but instead he got to spend it with me! Dressed in a button shirt and jeans, with a jacket and vest thrown in, looking all spiffy and put together.

Despite the restriction of not being able to run around the studio like a speeding train, we still managed to have a good time. From his constant questions (why, how, who?), to his great laugh and entertaining chatter, his session flew by quickly…and left me with lots of images of a variety of John Daniel faces!

All In One

November 15, 2013

Take an on-the-go, 18 Month Old, add multiple outfit changes, request for eye contact and cute expressions and what do you get…a whirlwind of a session! Will went from happy and excited to angry and frustrated to proud and loud to tired and sad to ornery and mischievous! Mommy, Daddy and I experience every emotion right along with him!

When it comes to this age, you just have to roll with it! That’s exactly what we did!

Silly Kid

November 12, 2013

It is almost impossible to get a serious image of Adele. This girl never stops smiling, laughing or talking!

She tells knock, knock jokes till she runs out…which is a long time, because the knock, knock jokes will start out cute and funny, and then they transition into things that make no sense at all.

She asks questions until you run out of answers. Who is that girl? Why did you photograph her? Why did she change dresses? The whys go on and on and on.

Then, when we transition to silly sayings, between Adele and I coming up with one liners, the laughter just fills the room!

A Little Teasing

November 7, 2013

Cooper arrived at his session a little unsure, but as soon as we broke out the treats, he was ready to stand at attention. Okay, maybe not! There’s not much of a stay bone in Cooper’s body! He loved the treats and would follow them wherever they went, but there wasn’t much standing at attention. It was more of a “catch me if you can” philosophy.

With a little help from Mommy, we would get Cooper into place and then, with certain words, I could get him to look right at the camera. So, yes, that’s where the teasing came into place. “Coopie, go for a ride.” “Cooper, want a treat.” “Coopie, go for a puppy walk.” Cooper would flip that head right at me and stare me down!

Of course, it wasn’t until we mentioned the word “Jeff” (ie. Daddy) that Cooper got upset about the teasing. It was all fun and games until we hinted that Daddy might be here, and he wasn’t!

Sorry for the teasing, Coopie…but it paid off…and you got quite a few treats in exchange!

Just a Few Laughs

November 5, 2013

When it comes to senior boys, the more I can do to embarrass them, joke with them, be dorky…the bigger and more relaxed the smiles get! Travis was no different!

Unfortunately for Travis, the more I embarrassed him, the more he laughed! His laugh was just too great not to bring out! He definitely can’t say that he didn’t smile, laugh or have fun at his senior session. Although, getting him to actually admit that he had fun…now that one might be a challenge!

Thanks for being a good sport, Travis! You definitely made the session fun and entertaining!

Too Easy

November 4, 2013

Landon is at that perfect stage where all I have to do is look at him and he starts laughing! It’s almost too easy to capture smiles and giggles and laughter.

The challenge comes when trying to get the more serious, calm expressions. Those require quiet and relaxed moments, neither of which happen very much when it comes to Landon. But no worries, in between giggles and laughter, I was able to capture a few closed mouth, quiet Landon moments!

Our Photography Adventure

November 1, 2013

I’m sure, as all parents can attest, getting photographs of your own kids can make you want to pull your hair out. For us professional photographers, it’s really not that different!

Yes, I can usually dig deep and find the patience and crazy antics that enables me to capture photos of my furry kiddos a few times a year, but I typically get the posed, “I’m sitting here until you give me a treat” stare. It doesn’t matter what noises I make, what my bribes are, how much I plead, getting a true, relaxed, playful look rarely happens!

So, I started to think that it would be fun to take our three fluffy kiddos to another photographer. I have been admiring Illona of scruffy dog photography’s work for quite some time. She works exclusively with animals, and her style is completely different from anything I create.

After doing lots of research, trading emails with Illona and doing our homework, Pete and I made the decision to arrange a trip to visit Illona, and her scruffy dog team, outside of the Toronto, Canada area.

Yes, at this point, I realize the majority of you are thinking I’m crazy! Two things…I love my pups and I love photography…and even more I love and will forever cherish all photographs of my pups!

We rented a car, packed up the backseat with dog beds and the tail end with dog food, toys and treats and headed on a road trip to Canada! The pups were such awesome travelers, sleeping when we were driving, doing their business when we were stopped and cuddling with us in the hotel rooms.

Our session with Illona was more than we could have ever asked for! She went above and beyond, making us feel right at home, welcoming us in to her home/studio, greeting the pups right away…even letting them try to get in a kiss or two, and of course showering them with treats! She took us all around her town, finding lots of creative places to photograph the pups…capturing images of them together and separate, and capturing exactly what I sometimes struggle to capture…personality!

We can’t wait to receive our complete order, including a large wall canvas portrait and an album filled with lots of amazing photos, but in the meantime Illona has created a blog post for us to drool over! Hope you enjoy the photos of our three fur balls as much as we do!

And, here are a few of my snapshots from our travels!

One Happy Kid

November 1, 2013

Robert is one energetic little man! Although he can be rolling around on the floor, talking your ear off, hearing trains, and flying like an airplane all in the span of one minute…he does it all with a smile and giggle!

As is the case with all boys, I know he has his moments of uncooperativeness and frustration, but any time I see him, he has a gigantic smile plastered across his face. It actually takes more work to get the serious expressions from him, then it does the smiles!

He’s just a happy little dude!
