His Chubbiness

August 14, 2013

At over ten pounds, Mac, is much bigger than his two siblings were when they were born, but the extra chub just adds to his cuteness! Those adorable round cheeks, chunky little arms and double chin are pinchable perfect!

Although, at times Mac was a bit opinionated about the placement of his arms and hands, for the most part he was the perfect sleeping model. He loved being held in Mommy’s arms and frequently wiggled himself into the crook of her hold.

He’s definitely captured Mommy’s heart and I’m sure the gang at home is also falling madly in love!

Tiny Baby Parts

April 18, 2013

One of my favorite things about photographing newborn babies is the chance to capture all their teeny, tiny little parts! Every detail, from their fingernails, to their fuzzy ears, to their sweet lips is amazing…and tiny! They don’t stay tiny for long and, within a couple of weeks, the fuzz will disappear, their fingernails will need trimming, their eyelashes will start to grow and those teeny tiny parts will start to turn into baby chub! Not that there’s anything wrong with baby chub. I do love squishy, chubby baby parts as well, but it’s just not the same as those brand new, teeny, tiny baby parts!

Still Tiny

March 28, 2013

Little Miss Audrey made her appearance much earlier than expected! Because of her size, it took a little bit longer than usual for Audrey to come out to the studio, therefore she was a little bit older than the typical newborn I photograph. I was worried that might mean a challenging session, and while we started off a little rough, with wide, inquisitive eyes and squirmy arms and legs, she finally settled in for some deep sleep. The secret was my space heater! She and I sat down just a few feet in front of the heater. It was like being in a sauna, and before I knew it, we were both warm and cozy and she had drifted off to sleep.

Of course, she’s very opinionated, and every time I went to move her, she had to fuss at me…usually just for short periods of time, but it was still quite the production. She was also very opinionated about the location of her hands and feet, so sometimes she got to choose their location. I know when to pick my battles!

Despite all of that, when you look at her, you would never know that she was more than a few days old. She’s still so tiny! Skinny arms, skinny legs and tiny petite features, all fit perfectly in the palms of Daddy’s hands!

Snowstorm Baby

March 18, 2013

(Not in the way you’re thinking!)

The night of the second February 2013 snowstorm was the night baby Charlie decided it was time to arrive. He was a couple of weeks early, but he wasn’t going to wait one more minute. At least he let Mommy know early enough that she was able to get to the hospital before any of the storm had really started.

For a guy born in the middle of winter and snow, you would think he would have packed on a few more pounds of fat before arriving…but no, he weighed in at just 7 lbs 2 ounces! He’s definitely a teeny little guy…with little features…from his cute little nose, to his tiny eyelashes! We were blessed by lots of good sleep the day of his session, giving me the opportunity to capture all those little features. But, the best images are the ones in Daddy’s hands. He looks like the tiny little guy he is!

Of course, we couldn’t leave out big brother! Joey was quite excited to introduce me to his little Charlie and even excited to take a few photos…but just a few. At four years old, he has many activities that demand his attention!

Chubby Cheeks!

January 8, 2013

At birth, Wesley weighed in at almost 8.5 pounds. Given that he only measured in at 19.5 inches, his good healthy weight made for some excellent chubby cheeks, arms and thighs!

I’m sure the chubbiness is just going to keep coming. Wesley is a great eater…chugging down bottles right and left!

Now, he just needs to learn how to sleep through all the commotion that comes along with having an older brother! Wesley was very sensitive during his session, quick to startle and very opinionated about the location of his hands. If his hands were not near his face, he was not going to cooperate…no ifs, ands or buts!

Touchy!

December 4, 2012

You would think that, being a second child, Chase would have the ability to sleep through noise, movement and all activity. Maybe he does at home, when he’s dressed in clothes and bundled in a seat or being held by someone, but not when he’s at his newborn session – naked and exposed!

Chase was super sensitive during his entire session. If we moved him or touched him his eyes would fly open. I’d get him to the brink of sleepy land and something would startle him awake. It was definitely a waiting game!

Of course, towards the end of the session, I finally got him to fall into a deep sleep. I was able to move him, turn him, position him however I pleased. It was exactly what I had been waiting for, except he didn’t lose his touchiness. Every time I would touch him, he would throw his arms and legs out in a jerky spasm and then, like it hadn’t even happened, he would settle back in to sleep. It was quite entertaining!

Some Like It Hot

August 16, 2012

It was 100 degrees outside, but I was running the space heater inside! The bonus to hot weather is that it’s easy to heat the studio to the perfect temperature for a newborn session…a toasty 86 degrees.

I started out with a warm studio, but I could tell that Weston was happiest when the space heater was blowing lightly on him, so we went for a hot studio. Even though there was sweat dripping from every part of my body, that space heater was blowing.

It made for a very content, happy Weston! Which made for a very fun session!

Mister Opinionated

May 9, 2012

At just ten days old, Will has a strong opinion and just like his name a strong “will”.

Although he was great at sleeping in my arms, when I would put him down, he would squirm and flinch. I would get him adjusted just like I wanted, turn away to grab my camera and he’d throw his arm up and flop it somewhere else, making me start the adjustment process all over.

He was the master at making faces! Although he made lots of cute smiley faces, he also had the scowl and the grimace faces down cold! If I adjusted him a way that he didn’t like, he was sure to throw out that bottom lip, or lift the upper lip in a grimace.

He may have had a strong will, but I have lots of patience, and my ability to wait him out broke his will more than once…resulting in adorable images of a teeny tiny Will!

Wide Eyed

March 30, 2012

Four years ago, when I photographed big brother Jodi’s newborn session, we captured a bunch of wide eyed, fully awake images. Mommy really wanted to make sure we got some matching, similar images of little brother, baby Jade.

“No problem”, Jade, said! Even though he’s been a really good sleeper for Mommy and Daddy, he was wide awake for his newborn session. Big eyes just staring!

It took quite a bit of coaxing and snuggling to get Jade to fall asleep long enough to capture some adorable, squishy sleepy poses.

Tiny Bit of Sleepiness

March 19, 2012

Ah, it doesn’t get any better then when a newborn baby sleeps soundly the entire session, twisting and turning every which way you ask!!

That was Sofia! After getting to the studio, we made her naked and then filled her belly full. After a brief period of eye movements and squirming to settle herself in, she fell asleep…hard!

For the most part, she didn’t mind which way I moved her. If she was on her back, on her side, on her belly…she worked with it all. Unless I tried to move her arms. Then, get out of her way, because she was going to put those arms where she wanted to put them! After some coaxing and compromising, I was at least able to get her hands out of her face, and eventually she fell into a deeper sleep, letting me do pretty much anything.

Add the fact that she’s just under seven pounds, and the result is this teeny, tiny bit of awesomeness!!

(Oh, I guess I should add the fact that she did successfully poop on me! She aimed right at me and let it go. So, I guess she can record that in her win column!)
