Only One Today

January 10, 2013

I’m a firm believer in not putting off for tomorrow what you can and should do today, especially when it comes to photography!

I cringe every time I hear the lines: “I need to lose five more pounds,” or “I don’t really like my hair,” or “It’s so hard to find something to wear,” because I know that those five more pounds, they’re never going to happen, finding the perfect outfit is as likely as finding bigfoot and the hair, sheesh, it looks different every day!

There is no such thing as perfection…this is coming from someone who at times can be obsessive compulsive and anal and a perfectionist in my own world! But there is a moment in time, a memory to be made and something here today that may not be here tomorrow.

Recently, a client of mine, a young, mid-forty year old, beautiful lady with a wonderful spirit passed away. One day she was with us and the next day her spiritual body had moved on.

I am so thankful that Leslie and her family never put off for tomorrow having their family portrait done. Almost every year since 2004, Leslie and her family would come see me. No, things weren’t always perfect. Sometimes family members were in difficult health, sometimes money was tight, sometimes finding the free time to drive the hour to get to me was challenging, but they did it, and because they did, they will forever have family portraits of a time when laughter was frequent, sisters were together, babies were born and memories were made!

A couple of days ago, Leslie’s sister posted this message on my facebook wall:

“As I tried desperately to sleep last night, it dawned on me that I need to be thankful for Ms. Brandi Majerle for her amazing professionalism and talent in photography.

Brandi was always able to capture my sister’s pure beauty, spirit and kindness. It is portrayed so vividly through the expressions in Leslie’s eyes and smile. When I look at my sister’s photos that have been taken by Brandi I feel her warmth that was nurtured by my parents and generously shared by her, to all she knew.

Thank you Brandi….. For the gift of love and memories you have provided to the McLendon family throughout the years. We are forever indebted to you.”

Days later and I still can’t read the words without getting teary-eyed and speechless. They mean the world to me…I was blessed to know Leslie, to see the love she and her family had for each other, and to capture it in a way that will live forever!

Leslie, you will always be in my heart!

Every kid goes through a stage where they repeat everything you say, and mimic you word for word. I have learned that there is now on iPad app that encourages this behavior. Anything you say, noises that you make into the app, get repeated back to you.

Four year old, Jodi, loves the app and therefore loves turning the app into real life! I’m pretty sure that for the entire session, he just repeated what I said. If I made noises he repeated those, too!! Considering I was working with him and his baby brother, I made a lot of random noises…especially when trying to get the attention of a baby. I’m glad I don’t have to listen to a record of myself every day!

Luckily, I was able to work the mimicking to my advantage and got him to laugh and smile with my words and sounds.

Working It!

October 21, 2009

Jodi had me cracking up all morning! He turned on the charm the minute he walked in the door. He was carrying his froggy and had to make sure he showed him to me. After leaving froggy on the couch, and a little clean-up of the face, Jodi was ready to go!

At first, he just gave me that look, the “what do you think you’re doing” look! Then he slowly started to warm up and smile. Then, he started giving me the eyes and the smirks, along with tons of great expressions! He was working the camera, or maybe he was working me! I think he knew he was going to be getting a treat when we were all said and done!

The Flirt

February 12, 2009

From the moment Jodi came in the door, he was staring me down and checking me out. He must have decided I was worthy…because he started flirting! He was giving me coy smiles and looking at me through his long eyelashes! His expressions were just too cute!

Since we always do a family portrait, with his family all around me, there were many helpers in the camera room during his session. Jodi thought he was hot stuff, because he had plenty of people staring at him, entertaining and performing for him. His eyes just didn’t know where to look! But that didn’t stop him from turning on the charm!

Loving His Hands

February 11, 2008

Jodi is in love with his hands, whether he’s staring at them, punching the air or sucking on them…his hands are always on the move! Getting his hands away from his face was pretty much impossible…unless he was sleeping, and there was no way he was going to sleep while he was naked! He was not much of a fan of being naked, even with the space heater pointed directly at him. He really made us work, but despite not having the perfect settings, he did quite well for his first portrait session!
